MTX Audio’s New Road Thunder Series 2011 Amplifiers

MTX Audio RT500D

MTX Audio is one of the leading companies in the car audio industry and is constantly working hard to take their products to the next level.  The Road Thunder Series will be the new addition to the already popular family of MTX amplifiers for 2011. Road Thunder amplifiers will be available in 5 different models, ranging from Class D Mono Block Amplifiers to 4-Channel Class A/B Amplifiers. With these different models to choose from MTX has ensured that their new line will be available for any car audio system, be it an entry level system or a more professional system. All Road Thunder amplifiers have a brushed aluminum finish giving them a professional look that will compliment any vehicle. The new Road Thunder series amplifiers will be sure to outperform any other amplifier in their class.

The RT500D will be one of the new Class D Mono Block amplifiers in the new Road Thunder Series. Rated at 250 watts RMS at 4 Ohms and 500 watts RMS at 2 Ohm will make this amplifier perfect for those looking to add some power to their car audio system without the need of any major upgrades to the battery or alternator.  The new RT500D will feature MTX’s patented Adaptive Class D Topology technology. By constantly moving the amplifiers switching energy, the harmonics are less likely to interfere with any FM frequencies and are not picked up by the audio system’s ground. This will improve the overall signal-to-noise radio giving a much cleaner and crisper sound without the worry of interfering noise usually found in other Class D amplifiers.  The MTX Smart Engage technology will allow for installation into any system in any car. Smart Engage eliminates the need for adapters or converters when installing the RT500D into any factory A/V system. This means that you will be able to retain factory features like navigation or steering wheel controls without the need to remove the factory source.  A dual layer printed circuit board with twice the amount of copper that is found in other amplifiers will be featured in the RT500D, which will improve the THD+N making it a more accurate amplifier.  With an added external bass control and patented features this amplifier is sure to satisfy your car audio needs.

Upgrading Your Vehicles Electrical System

Adding a high powered car audio system to your vehicle could definitely make your driving sessions much more enjoyable, but it can also do some damage to the electrical system if you do not upgrade. Most vehicles electrical systems are 12 volt DC systems, when the vehicle is not running, the primary source of power is the battery or power cell. When the vehicle is running, the alternator is the primary source of power. Depending on your car’s factory electrical system, you may not have enough power to run your aftermarket stereo system, that’s when it’s time for an electrical system upgrade. There are a few different options when upgrading such as adding another battery, upgrading your alternator, or adding a capacitor.

Stinger SPV70 Dry Cell Battery

Adding a Second battery

The main function of your cars battery is to start the vehicle and provide power when the vehicle is not on. Many people are under the impression that adding a second battery will cure their electrical problems; this is not the case at all. Adding a second battery to your vehicle will only provide you with more “parking-lot” listening time when the vehicle is not running. After the vehicle is started, the second battery becomes another load on an already overworked factory alternator. If you are trying to correct a problem such as an overload of the charging system from the stereo system, it will not be eliminated by adding another battery. However, if you do decide to add another battery, you must decide whether you want to use a battery isolator, or to simply wire the batteries in parallel. If you are using two different types, models, or ages of batteries, it is necessary to use an isolator. The isolator will allow the alternator to charge each independent battery as needed as opposed to seeing both batteries as a single load. Parallel wiring does not require an isolator, but the first thing to consider in parallel addition of batteries is that it is absolutely essential that both batteries be the exact same type, model, and should be as close to the same age as possible. If you do decide to add another battery, I suggest adding a Stinger SPV70 Power Series Battery. This dry cell battery is perfect for high power systems up to 2100 watts.

High Output Alternator

Upgrading Your Alternator

The alternator is the primary source of power when the vehicle is running and the single most important modification you can make when upgrading your electrical system. If you experience frequent dead batteries in your vehicle, it is a good indication that your electrical system isn’t providing enough power and it may be time to upgrade your alternator. When you add a high powered audio system to your ride, the factory alternator is usually too small and has to look to the battery for some extra power, which shortens the batteries life-span. Upgrading your alternator will provide your vehicle with more juice to run all of your electrical components, including your car audio stereo system, without drawing power from the battery.

Tsunami PP92UM-CAP Digital 2 Farad Hybrid Power Capacitor

Adding a Power Capacitor

Car audio capacitors are a great addition to any aftermarket car audio system that is in need of a little extra power. A power capacitor stores power until needed for high electrical demands such as heavy bass notes. Most capacitors usually consist of two metallic plates separated by a dielectric. If you have a problem with annoying dimming headlights every time your stereo is cranked up, a capacitor is just what you need. The dimming is caused by a voltage drop created by the large power demands of your amplifier. The power capacitor helps fill in the gaps for the energy required by your amps. Capacitors use the measurement unit “farad” to determine the size and power output. Here at Sonic Electronix, we like to use the ratio of “1 farad equals 1000 watts” to determine the size of capacitor needed to supply enough power to an amplifier. When adding a power cap, try to use one that is equal to or close to the power output of your car audios system, using a larger capacitor will not damage the audio system, but it will put an unnecessary strain on the vehicles electrical system. Tsunami Capacitors are known for being high quality and we have plenty on our website to suit your needs.

Upgrading your electrical system is one of the most overlooked aspects when adding a high powered car audio sound system to your vehicle. Depending on your situation and the type of system you installed, be sure to to enhance that electrical system for ultimate performance.

How Loud is Too Loud: Learning More About Hearing

Sonic Electronix is dedicated to keeping their customers safe. In a world of car audio fanatics and loud music, protecting our ears is often an overlooked idea. However, ear protection is among the most important things that we can do for our bodies. In the Infographic below, Sonic Electronix aims to teach their valued customers about dangerous sound levels.

How loud is Too Loud: Learning More about Hearing

How is Sound Measured?

Sound is measured with decibels, also written as “dB”. The decibel scale ranges from 0 dB to 300 dB. Zero represents absolute silence, whereas three hundred represents the loudest sound in the world. Special tools are used to measure the decibel rating of sound, such as the Scosche SPL1000 SPL Meter. There are also a number of other meters and phone applications that will measure the dB rating.

The Loudest Sounds in the World

The longer a person’s ears are exposed to loud sounds, the more hearing loss will occur. In fact, hearing loss can begin at prolonged exposure above 85 dB. Just about any sound over that dB rating will attribute to hearing loss. This is a reason why it is important to know what these levels sound like and how to properly protect your ears when exposed to loud sounds. Some of the loudest sounds in the world include gunfire (155 dB), NHRA Dragsters (160 dB), a 1-ton TNT bomb (210 dB), and a 5.0 Earthquake (235 dB). The loudest sound ever recorded was the Tunguska Meteor at 315 dB.

Signs of Hearing Loss

There are many signs that humans show when their hearing begins to deteriorate. These signs included ear pain, ear itching, muffled hearing, pus leaking from the ear, tinnitus, as well as having a difficult time hearing what people say.

Don’t become a victim of hearing loss. Wear the proper ear protection when you know that you will be exposed to loud sounds.

The Zoom H4n and Your DSLR

Zoom H4n

The Zoom H4n handy recorder is the most popular field audio recorder on the market. This handy little device is revolutionizing the way we look at the deployment of field audio recording for DSLR video as well as the recording of live music, podcasting, post production sound effects, and many broadcast applications.
H4n on a DSLR

With the onset popularity of the new go anywhere portability of DSLR cameras in professional production it is imperative to equip comparably portable peripheral equipment. The Zoom H4n is perfect for these applications. Typically in order for a production to have the best audio possible there is a technician present on set with his or her own kit of dedicated gear. This kit includes a slew of audio equipment including very complex field audio recorders, mixers, wireless lav mics, transmitters, receivers, boom poles, blimps, shotgun mics, and a coffin case full of cables and connectors, as well as all the necessary equipment to sync up with the cameras. This poses a problem for videographers working on smaller productions or documentary pieces with limited budgets. In the best case scenario the more responsibility that can be placed in the hands of capable professionals the better your results will be; however, in some cases videographers simply cannot afford to hire a technician to operate all of the conventional audio equipment needed for great sound. The Zoom H4n is the perfect solution for such applications. In today’s “run and gun” video production industry indie film makers wear many hats including the sound guy.

The Zoom H4n is equipped with a coincident pair of condenser microphones set in an x/y pattern for binaural stereo imaging at either 90° or 120°. In addition to the onboard mics the H4n sports two XLR ¼ combo connectors with a phantom power supply and the ability to record all four tracks at once. This means that you can have a boom mic and lavaliere on your talent  or you can record ambient sound with the onboard stereo mics all to discrete tracks on the H4n. As you can imagine that makes the H4n a very powerful recording tool for taping live shows or record anywhere it isn’t practical to bring more complex recording equipment.

There RC4 for H4nis also an available remote control (RC-4) with standard transport controls and track arming, a very handy feature since the H4n has a ¼ 20 tripod mount as well as a mic stand adaptor. Just a bit larger than an iPhone and weighing just over 2lbs, the H4n has no trouble being mounted to a fish pole or camera shoe.

Zoom really hit the nail on the head with this device and now they are introducing the Q3HD which incorporates the same x/y stereo mics, preamps, and encoders as the H4n with a 1080i digital camera, comparable to the popular Flip cams. This sort of professional quality equipment designed for ease of use and the quick turnaround of production makes me very excited to see what’s next from Zoom.
