Hello loyal readers, I’m checking in from Las Vegas, home of the annual SEMA Show convention, the world’s largest automotive specialty products event. As I type, I am literally surrounded by competition cars loaded with the finest car audio products on the market! Check back today for updates, I will be periodically live-blogging throughout the day today.
All of the industry leading brands such as KICKER, Pioneer, and Alpine are on-site displaying their fantastic show cars loaded with aftermarket audio equipment. KICKER’s black Ford Mustang featured oversized midwoofers custom-mounted in the front door panels. This created a sound equivalent to having subwoofers mounted in the door panels, which as you can imagine, really ratchets the bass up a notch! The KICKER reps also showed us their marine speaker bass tube concept designs, which are essentially KICKER speakers custom-designed for bass tube enclosures. This concept enables you to safely mount KICKER speakers on your boat.
The Scosche booth was pretty amazing as well, I will provide more on that later today. Stay tuned as we will be posting exclusive videos, photos, and tidbits to help give you an in-depth look at this awesome event. SonicElectronix TV host Seth Wilde will also be hosting on-camera interviews with the top car audio manufacturers. More updates to come!

It may not feel like summer any more, but don’t let that discourage you from purchasing the latest head unit for your boat. We currently have 3 Sony packages that are sure to have everything you will need and more while out on your boat. Each package includes a Sony head unit and, as a bonus, a wired remote control. These marine stereos have a boat theme that should blend in great with your boat’s interior, and they are built to last.
First, the Sony CDX-H905IP combo consists of the CDX-H905IP marine receiver and the RM-X11M remote. The CDX-H905IP MP3 player puts a fresh face on marine audio components with a bright display and intuitive controls. It features CD, MP3 and WMA playback and will play all your favorite music while cruisin’ out on the water. Not only do you get amazing sound playback from the CD and MP3 player, there is also a built-in iPod adapter located on the back of the head unit. This allows for a direct connection from your iPod to the receiver. And without the need for any extra cables, you can easily plug your iPod in for hours of music. As for audio features, there is the EQ3 Equalizer with seven preset tone curves and a dynamic soundstage organizer. The Sony CDX-H905IP has the option for Sirius or XM Satellite radio and HD radio playback as well.

Second, the Sony CDX-M60Ui combo includes the CDX-M60Ui marine CD player with MP3 and WMA playback and the RM-X11M remote. While this unit doesn’t have direct iPod connection, the rear USB input allows the connection of an iPod with a standard iPod cable. If you don’t have an iPod, a USB thumb drive preloaded with music will also work with this option. The built-in amplifier will carry the music through any type of weather, while the equalizer works to produce a perfect blend of frequencies. Along with CD, MP3, WMA and iPod playback, you have the option of adding Sirius satellite radio or HD radio to your head unit. All of these “extras” combined make this feature-packed head unit a must-have for both car audio enthusiasts and beginners alike.
Lastly, the Sony CDX-HS70MW combo consists of a basic marine head unit and the RM-X11M remote. The CDX-HS70MW stereo is specially designed to withstand the marine environment. It comes with CD, MP3, and WMA playback capabilities for reliable entertainment while on the water. Unlike the previous two receivers, this one does not come with a built-in iPod cable, but it does have a separate module that needs to be purchased for iPod playback. Don’t let that deter you though; this head unit is a great buy! The built-in amplifier will play your music over any type of noise and can use an external amp for extra power. This receiver also comes with the ability to add on satellite and HD radio, making the possibilities endless.
And, as mentioned, you will receive the Sony RX-X11M Marine remote with each one of these CD player combos (Note: you can also purchase any of the CD players separately). It has a splash-proof design made specifically for Sony marine stereos. With its large, easy to use buttons, you will have no problem controlling the volume, source selection, mode and turning the stereo off.
Don’t miss out on this amazing opportunity to get a wonderful head unit with a bonus wired remote for the fraction of the cost!

By Seth Wilde – Host of Sonic Electronix TV
Here at SonicElectronix.com, we strive to offer the best customer service possible. Part of customer service is having the knowledge to answer questions that customers have about products. In order to accomplish this, training sessions are held on a regular basis to augment the knowledge of the SonicElectronix.com staff. Recently, representatives from Kicker Car Audio came to our building to provide training on all of the Kicker products out there!
They began their training with a brief history of Kicker, explaining that it was started in 1980 when the founder Steve Irby developed the first full-range speaker box made specifically for the car. In 1986, Kicker released both the Competition woofer, known as the original small box woofer, and the Freeair woofer, which was designed specifically for free air applications. By 1992, Kicker introduced the first Kicker Solo Baric subwoofer. One year later they released their first fully regulated power supplies and amplifiers. Kicker continued devising innovative products and in 2000 the world’s first Kicker Solo-Baric L7 square subwoofer was released. As they developed more and more products, the Kicker technology advanced more and more. Such technology includes the unpiloted, stitched surrounds, extended pole pieces, T and L cut top plates, Inverted Structural Dome (I.S.D.), perimeter venting, and the S.P.A.I.R re-cone kit.
Before talking about their full line of subwoofers, they explained the principle of having a square subwoofer. Like many ingenious innovations, the principle behind the design is pretty simple. Square subwoofers provide the most cone area for the size of the speaker box baffle. On average, a square subwoofer has about 25% more cone area than a round subwoofer of the same size. More cone area means that the subwoofer is able to move more air and thus it will produce more bass.
After talking about some of the incredible technology that goes into making a Kicker sub, the Kicker representative began to talk in detail about each of their products. It was an unbelievably informative training session. They were able to answer every single question despite the fact that our representatives asked some pretty detailed questions! We learned about the three major square subwoofers: the Solo X, the L7, and the L5. These square woofers are created with unique specifications to maximize their performance. The Solo X is Kicker’s competition and extreme woofer. The Solo X includes a S.P.A.I.R. re-cone kit, which allows you to maintain and repair the cone throughout the lifetime of the sub. The L7 is the original square subwoofer and Kicker’s best selling square subwoofer. The L5 is Kicker’s most affordable square subwoofer and provides 70% the performance of the L7, but for a fraction of the price. Both the L5 and L7 subs are available in preloaded boxes that Kicker manufacturers specifically for these subs. They are finely tuned to the specs of the enclosed woofer and provide the best sound for that woofer.
Along with the square subs, we also learned about the round woofers. The Kicker CVX is the best performing round subwoofer and is essentially a round L7. New to the 2009 Kicker line-up is the Solo Classic, which produces the same amount of bass in only half of the space. Next we discussed the CVT subwoofers. The CVT line features subs in a variety of sizes, which makes it easy to find the proper fit for your install application. Then we learned about the Comp VR (CVR). The CVR is Kicker’s best performing “value” subwoofer. When enclosed in a ported box, the Kicker CVR is able to produce some big bass! Lastly we learned that the Kicker Comp is the industry leading subwoofer and bestseller. They are highly efficient subs with moderate power and big Kicker bass. The Kicker woofers use a SoloKon cone that is ultra strong and injection molded to enhance the sound of the woofers. With a Kicker subwoofer, loud bass is practically guaranteed!
After completing subwoofer training, we began to discuss the full line of Kicker speakers. At first we discussed the newest QS and RS speakers. The QS components are Kickers premium speaker system and use Kickers most advanced technology and engineering to create the ultimate sounding speaker. The crossover on the QS speakers use an asymmetrical design and a Zobel Impedance correction network to spread the response across the entire speakers; bandwidth. The crossover also integrates an Illuminated protection circuit, as well as Mylar caps and air core inductors. Judging from the demonstration, the QS speakers sound absolutely phenomenal. We were just getting started though. After learning about the QS speakers, we began to discuss the high-end RS series speakers. Apparently the RS speakers have been redesigned for 2009 and use a lot of the same technology and engineering as the QS. The main differences between the two are the materials and the crossover. The RS features a slightly simplified version of the QS crossover, but it still has all of the necessary features of a high-end speaker. Finally, we briefly talked about the KS and DS series speakers. We learned about the polyswitch tweeter protection on the KS speakers and the perfect OEM upgrade for the DS series speakers.
After discussing subs and speakers, we were ready to learn about amplifiers. This was one of the highlights of the training. We got to see the amplifiers inside and out. We learned what makes a Kicker amp a Kicker amp. The quality and precision that goes into each and every amplifier is second to none. We were most impressed with the thorough quality control involved in the production of ZX amplifiers. Each and every ZX amp is tested before it leaves the factory. The spec sheet that is included in each amp tells the tested RMS wattage of the amplifier and each one is underrated. This way, when a customer purchases a ZX amplifier, they are getting more than what they paid for!
After finishing the major categories, we moved to more specialized fields like marine technology. In fact, the Kicker power sports line includes but is not limited to marine series speakers, subs and amps. We learned that Kicker now refers to the marine series as the power sports series because these items are completely designed to withstand harsh conditions in general and not just in the boat. Power sport models are made to work perfectly on boats, jeeps, ATV’s, patios, in the backyard, and even zambonis! The Kicker Power Sports amplifiers, speakers, and subwoofers are perfect for any application that might require a more durable and protected item.
Next we learned about Kicker’s mobile audio products. The Kicker experts taught us all about the SoundGate iPod and Zune accessories. The Kicker CORE system is designed to provide playback of your iPod in your car. All of the cables are included, making it easy to get started. The CORE also provides 5V USB charging. These systems will allow playback from the iPod itself and can even connect and play video from the iPod! Next we discussed the SoundGate iO series, a new way to integrate your iPod and other audio source to your car via Bluetooth! The plug and play system allows for Bluetooth audio, handsfree communication, and music streaming. It is still in the development stages and has yet to be released, but it will be the ideal solution for adding Bluetooth and navigation voice guidance to vehicles that are not suitable for aftermarket in-dash head units. It would make an excellent addition to classic cars!
The last thing we were trained on was the home and portable line. This includes Kicker headphones and their iPod shelf systems. The headphones include high performance ear-buds and an active style “on-the-ear” headphone. The ear buds produce incredible acoustic sound quality given their slight dimensions. These headphones are perfect for the on-the-go listener. The active style headphones are made for those that live an active lifestyle and need a headphone that will stay on the head. Beyond that, we learned about iPod docking shelf systems such as the iK500. Based on the demonstration, this system provides iPod playback through loud and clear speakers that fill the entire room with music. For those that enjoy a Zune as opposed to the iPod, Kicker makes the ZK500, which is similar in features but designed to dock and play the Zune.
We here at SonicElectronix.com were impressed with the training seminar and we are blown away at the quality of Kicker products. The Kicker representatives were extremely knowledgeable and knew everything about their products. Kicker is definitely a high quality company that takes as much care of its products as they do their customers.

MB Quart products have established a great reputation during their 40 years of manufacturing audio products. Once an independent line based in Germany, the MB Quart brand is now a subsidiary of the USA-based Maxxsonics Company. Despite the change in ownership, MB Quart products continue to generate tons of positive feedback from users. MB Quart is one of the leading producers of marine audio products, specifically designed for use in boats, motorcycles, and other outdoor applications. Their latest success story is their Nautic line of marine speakers.
If you are looking to add a set of 6” x 9” marine speakers to your boat, the MB Quart NKF692 marine speakers are the latest buzz in the marine audio world. It is well documented how MB Quart’s titanium dome tweeters produce exquisitely clear highs, and these speakers are no exception. These speakers feature a special marine grade version of MB Quart’s trademark tweeters and are designed specifically to sound great in open-air, outdoor conditions. MB Quart made sure to design these speakers with extra protection, as the built-in crossover even features special protective sealing lacquer. The built-in crossover enables the NKF692 speakers to filter highs and lows and produce melodious sound.
These 2-way speakers are fully marine certified and will withstand water, UV rays, and other outdoor hazards. As you inspect the speaker, you notice that the polyprolene cone has been injection molded to withstand heat in the outdoors environment. In terms of durability, the basket and grills are designed with UV-resistant fiber-reinforced material. Furthermore, the voice-coils are actually protected against direct water spray. Upon examining these speakers, it is clear that they will produce great sound for years to come.
An outdoors environment requires plenty of power to overcome background noise. These 6” x 9” speakers are a great choice because they pack 120 watts of continuous RMS power per pair. You will probably want to power this pair of marine speakers with a 2 channel marine amplifier. You might also bridge a 4-channel marine amp. Either way, these speakers are capable of filling your entre boat with the pleasant sound of your favorite tunes.

I had a chance to look at the Sony CDX-M50iP marine ready CD and MP3 player the other day, and I came away impressed. Ever since the iPod came out, boaters have longed to use their iPods with their marine stereos. This marine stereo allows you to do just that. The built-in iPod connection enables you to control your iPod through your faceplate controls, so you don’t need to worry about fiddling around with the iPod. You can also charge most iPods, but the Apple iPhone 3G, iPod Nano 4th Gen, and the iPod Touch 2nd Gen cannot be charged unless you purchase the Scosche IFWA PassPORT charging adapter. Even if you don’t own an iPod, the front aux input is a compatible with most other portable MP3 or CD players.
 Scosche Ifwa
The expandability options are impressive for any stereo, let alone for a marine series stereo. This unit is HD radio and satellite radio compatible. HD digital radio provides additional programming free, plus it provides a clearer broadcast of the regular AM and FM channels. You just need to purchase an additional tuner for this marine stereo. The satellite radio ready function means it is ready for commercial free satellite broadcasting, with the additional purchase of an antenna and tuner.
Just from handling this model, it is clear that it has been designed for outdoor usage. The integrity of the coated circuit boards and the firm layers of UV- and salt-resistant paint will protect this stereo, even in outdoor environments. The internal circuitry is protected by a sealed gasket, which prevents any liquid from penetrating through the CD slot.
Controlling your stereo without having to touch the faceplate is important for outdoor durability. The good news is this stereo comes standard with a marine remote. What makes this stereo even more valuable is that you have the option of adding a wired remote. A wired remote allows you to maintain full control over the stereo, even if you mount the head unit in a secluded spot away from the outdoor elements. If you don’t feel it is necessary to add a wired remote, you can use the provided wireless remote. All things considered, this marine stereo is a great addition to any boat.

Marine audio products are built to survive elements that regular electronics cannot handle, such as light rain, moisture and harmful sun rays. Marine stereo components are great for building stereo systems in boats, motorcycles, and outdoor areas because they are water, fog, salt, and UV ray resistant. These products use only the strongest materials, so you can enjoy your stereo system in the outdoor environment without worrying about rust and corrosion.
In terms of expandability and features, marine head units are quickly becoming equals to aftermarket car stereos. The Sony CDX-H905IP is a marine MP3 CD player with iPod control. This splash-proof marine head unit has a built-in iPod interface cable for iPod controls, charging and playback. You can take your iPod with you and use your stereo faceplate to control your playlists while sailing at sea. If you have an iPhone, you can add on the Scosche PassPORT IFWA for plug and play charging of the iPhone 3G.
The CDX-H905IP has a rear RCA input for further expandability options, such as satellite radio or navigation. The sealed, flip-down design keeps the internal circuitry protected from moisture and dirt. The faceplate has customizable red and blue color schemes and its rounded shape looks as though it were a part of your boat’s controls.
Although the CDX-H905IP includes a wireless remote control, you can add the Sony RM-X55M wired marine remote control. The Sony RM-X55M sends a signal to the CDX-H905IP internally, so you don’t have to point it at the stereo for remote control operation. This further protects the stereo from the outdoor elements since you don’t have to mount the stereo in an open area.
For a total boat sound system, you should consider adding marine speakers to your boat. A great set of marine speakers for your boat are the Sony XS-MP1620B. These 6-1/2” 2-way boat speakers are a great addition to your boat stereo system. As they handle 45 watts of RMS power each speaker, you should add a four-channel marine amplifier to power them. A head unit, such as the CDX-H9051P, only provides 17 watts of RMS by 4 channels.
