Often referred to as a deck or radio, the head unit is a one of the most crucial component of your vehicle’s stereo system. It is the heart of your system and provides a unified audio hardware interface that controls all the components. While music maybe the primary reason for an aftermarket radio, innovative companies are constantly introducing more and more sophisticated head units to the market that can do more than just play music.

While old school receivers were very simplistic in design and functionality, today’s head units are very advanced and have integrated a variety of  new features. Some basic features include AM/FM Radio, CD/DVD and MP3 playback  however some of the more advanced units are offering features such as GPS navigation, mirror-link capabilities, Android Auto, and Apple Car Play to name a few. When it comes to top of the line head units, nobody delivers quality and functionality quite like Pioneer. If you are thinking of upgrading or replacing your stereo, check out some of the new 2016 Pioneer head units and the new features that Pioneer has introduced.

Pioneer FH-X730BS

The Pioneer FH-X730BS double DIN Bluetooth CD/AM/FM digital media receiver is a perfect choice for the consumer that is looking for quality sound but does not necessarily require the more advanced functions that are offered in the higher end models.  Stream music directly from your Bluetooth enabled cell phone or music device and never have to worry pesky cords again. In addition, the MIXTRAX and variable color features allow you to view DJ inspired visuals while listen to your favorite song.

Pioneer AVIC-8200NEX

The Pioneer AVIC-8200NEX is another noteworthy head unit worth mentioning. This bad boy is the top of the line head unit from Pioneer and in my opinion, of all time. This double DIN radio comes with a ton of state-of-the-art features as well as an awesome slick design with a ton of expand-ability options. If I had to choose my favorite feature of the AVIC-8200NEX, it would definitely be the 7″ WVGA touchscreen display. The picture is super crisp and delivers the highest and most responsive speeds. Faster and more sensitive than any other head unit on the market. Did I mention that the screen functions just like your Smartphone with the ability to zoom in and out by pinching your fingers and flick between screens just like with your iPhone. Simply put, this things is awesome but quality does not come cheap. If you are the type of person that values quality and functionality, this is things has it all.

Maybe you do not need the top of the line stereo but you still want the features that are in the higher end units without the price tag; the Pioneer AVH-X4800BS is a great option. This receiver has Bluetooth for hands-free calling but unlike the FH-X730BS,  the AVH-X4800BS gives users full control over music streaming apps such as Pandora, Spotify, and iHeartRadio from their Smartphone. That’s not all… This unit comes with Siri Eyes Free which gives users control over Apple’s voice command feature. Now you can send text messages, receive notifications and access information straight from your head unit. This definitely is a very convenient and safe feature that has a ton of useful applications.
