What Car Amplifier Do I Need for My JL Audio W3v3 Subwoofer?

In this week’s What Amplifier Do I Need? we will be looking at JL Audio’s W3v3 Series Subwoofers. The W3v3 subwoofers are available in a 6.5”, 8”, 10”, 12”, and 13.5” size option that will satisfy any personal preference. The woofers range from 150W RMS to 600W RMS depending on the size of the woofer. JL Audio is known for manufacturing amazing drivers that are able to produce unsurpassed bass reproduction but even these amplifiers can’t power themselves up, they need the right amplifier to perform.

JL Audio XD200/2

XD200/2

If you are going to go with a JL Audio subwoofer might as well go with a JL Audio amplifier. The JL Audio XD200/2 is the perfect amplifier when wanting to get your feet a little wet. This amplifier works perfectly when wanting to amplify a single 6W3v3-8 or a single 8W3v3-4 subwoofer when bridging the 2-channels. The amplifier will put out 150W RMS at 8 ohms bridged or 200W RMS at 4 ohms bridged. There really is nothing better than a JL Audio amp, this amp will be extremely efficient and features technologies like Advanced Thermal Rollback in order to eliminated thermal shut-down events. The amp features low and high pass filters as well as noise killing differential-balanced inputs for clean and reliable power output.

Alpine MRX-M50

MRX-M50

The Alpine MRX-M50 is rated at 500W RMS @ 2 ohms, making it the perfect amplifier when wanting to run a 10W3v3-2, 12W3v3-2, or a 13W3v3-2 subwoofer. Its small design and both high-level and low-level inputs allow this amp to be installed in virtually any vehicle, not many other amplifiers can offer that. The amplifier also features a variable bass boost along with a low-pass filer and subsonic filter that will allow you to manipulate the frequencies to your personal taste. When purchasing an efficient sub like the W3v3 you need an amplifier that is just as reliable and also affordable.

Boston Acoustics GTA-100m

GTA-100m

Boston Acoustic’s GTA-1000m monoblock amplifier is rated at 600W RMS @ 4 ohms. This amp will allow you to run a 10W3v3-4, 12W3v3-4, or 13W3v3-4 subwoofer to a final super efficient impedance of 4 ohms. This is going to give you the best performance, the amplifier won’t have to work as hard and draw less power for lower thermal output. The woofer will run more efficiently as well due to the constant supply of undisturbed power. The GTA-1000m features balanced asymmetrical inputs for noise cancellation and fully adjustable and selectable low and high-pass crossovers for complete customization of sound reproduction.

What Car Amplifier Do I Need for My Alpine Type-R Subwoofer?

Here at Sonic Electronix we give our customer the option and opportunity to ask us questions regarding car audio. One of the most common questions that we receive is What Amplifier Do I Need? For the next couple of weeks we will be looking into some of our top rated woofers and we will be pairing them with the perfect amplifier to make your car audio system run efficiently and smoothly. This week we will be taking a look at Alpine Type-R Series Subwoofers.

Kicker 10ZX500.1

10ZX500.1

Kicker’s ZX500.1 monoblock amplifier is the perfect choice when looking to amplify a single SWR-1043D or a single SWR-1243D Alpine subwoofer. The ZX500.1 has a power rating of 500W RMS at 2 ohms which is enough power to properly run any of those two subwoofers when wired in parallel to a final impedance of 2 ohms. The Kicker amp will actually exceed the rated power meaning you get more bang for your buck. The ZX500.1 features a tuned bass EQ, variable low-pass filter, and a subsonic filter for complete control of the sound reproduction. The amplifier is CEA-2006 compliant meaning you get the power you paid for and also features a high-density convection heat sink for extreme heat dissipation, allowing you to run the Type-R for long periods of time without losing efficiency.

Massive D 1200

D 1200

Massive Audio’s D 1200 monoblock amplifier is the amplifier to go with when wanting to amplifier a single SWR-1023D or a single SWR-1223D Alpine subwoofer. These subwoofers can be wired individually to either a final impedance of 1 ohm when wired in parallel or 4 ohms when wired in series. The D 1200 will require you wire which ever subwoofer you go with to a final impedance of 1 ohm. The amplifier offers a small chassis for convenient installation and a 6-way protection circuitry for complete protection of the car audio system. It also features an N-channel circuitry for high-efficiency eliminating clipping and cutting that usually occurs on less efficient amplifiers.

Polk Audio PA D1000.1

PA D1000.1

The Polk Audio PA D1000.1 will allow you to run the SWR-1023D or the SWR1223D to a final impedance of 4 ohms. This is the best way to go, the amplifier will run at the up most efficiency and so will the woofers. The PA D1000.1 can also be used if wanting to amplify two of these subs instead of just one; this will have to be done to a final impedance of 1 ohm on the amplifier. The amplifier features a variable bass boost, low-pass filter and subsonic filter for a custom sound reproduction. While the included wired remote bass level control adds convenience.

Battle of the Subwoofers: JL Audio W3 vs Alpine Type-R

Last week we discussed the differences between a Rockford Fosgate P3 subwoofer and a Kicker Solo-Baric L7, and focused on the features that set them apart from each other. In this week’s second “battle” we will go pound for pound with the Alpine Type R and the JL Audio W3. Both of these series of car subwoofers are considered high quality and never disappoint.

JL Audio 12W3v3-2

12W3v3-2

JL Audio is one of those companies that everyone knows by name. Even if they have never heard any of their drivers people will still tell you that JL Audio is considered one of the top companies in the car audio industry. Hard work and precision goes into all of their products and nothing could be more true about JL Audio’s 12W3v3-2 W3 series subwoofer. Many of the subwoofer’s patented technologies focus on the response and linear movement of the subwoofer, making it one of the most accurately precise woofers on the market today. While the W3 will sound great in a ported enclosure it was design to perform at is best in a smaller sealed enclosure, allowing the subwoofer to produce tight, crisp, and clean bass every single time. One of the coolest things about the W3 is that while other woofers suffer under lower power conditions, the W3 does not; in fact it will still reproduce clear and tight bass at multiple power ranges. The W3 is really the subwoofer that was designed for those who don’t want to miss a beat.

Alpine SWR-1243D

SWR-1243D

Alpine’s SWR-1243D Type-R series subwoofer is one of the most top rated subwoofers not only on our site but within the car audio world and for a number of very good reasons. With an RMS power handling of 600 watts, this woofer is able to really reproduce some hard hitting bass. Alpine’s patented High Amplitude Multi-Roll surround allows the woofer do deliver deep and clean bass. The Type-R woofer is known as a power hungry subwoofer meaning that it wants all the power it can handle because it was designed to play loud. One of these woofers is more than enough to make your car shake eliminating the need for additional woofers, unless of course you want more power and want the entire block to hear you coming. This woofer is able to combine SPL with SQ and a price that is more than great. Its ability to be a versatile subwoofer, really sets it apart from other woofers who are more proned to play better under one condition than the other.

Sonic Electronix’s Recommendations For Car Subwoofers

Here at Sonic Electronix we are a diverse group of individuals with a decent range of age, who all have a love, be it small or big, for car audio. In the Descriptions Department we all come from different walks of life and listen to different types of music. Some of us prefer SPL while others prefer SQ. In this industry you either know what you want or someone gives their advice or opinion on a certain brand or model and you end up going with that. Below are some of our favorite car subwoofers within the Descriptions Department here at Sonic Electronix.

RE Audio SEX12D4

SEX12D4

Seth, “the boss”, has an eye for RE Audio’s SEX12D4 12” SE-X series subwoofer. This woofer is able to handle 600 watts of RMS and is perfect for either a sealed or ported enclosure, giving you either some serious bass output or a more accurate and responsive bass. The woofer has a dual composite 2-piece cone and rubatek foam surround for rigidity and optimum performance. Seth has a wide taste in music so the SEX12D4 suits his needs for elongated bass when needed or short precise bass when listening to some alternative rock music. This really is the all around subwoofer for its ability to perform on both ends of the spectrum.

Alpine SWR-1243D

SWR-1243D

David, “ the veteran”, is not much for car audio but even he gets goose bumps and inner child comes out when he hears the Alpine SWR-1243D 12” Type-R series subwoofer. David’s playlist will showcase many genres of music but you can’t miss the fact that he loves rap and music that really has a beat. Nothing could be better than the Type-R for this genre of music, with an RMS handling of 600 watts; this subwoofer is known for being power hungry which means a ridiculous amount of bass. With an Xmax of 20mm this woofer will sound booming in a ported enclosure but will also perform beautifully in a sealed enclosure. The many technologies and high-end materials used on the SWR-1243D subwoofer make it one of the top subwoofers in its class.

Kicker Solo-Baric 11S10L74

S10L74

Harry, “the new guy”, is your staple Generation Y kid and all he wants is bass. For him Kicker’s 11S10L74 10” L7 series subwoofer is the way to go. With a square design woofer this subwoofer is able to output 18% more bass that will make it sound more like a 12” subwoofer than a 10”. Even with his desire for bass Harry still likes quality and Kicker is very well known in the car audio world for making products that last and perform for long periods of time without diminishing in quality. Improvements to the woofer cone and structure of this woofer, allow for better heat dissipation and more surface area for harder hitting longer lasting bass. As always Kicker has made installation a piece of cake by using spring loaded terminals for secure and quick installs. Harry might be the young buck in group but he definitely knows what a good subwoofer should sound like.

Boston Acoustics G312-44

G312-44

For me it’s all about quality, quick and responsive bass. For this reason one of my favorite subwoofer is the Boston Acoustics G312-44 G3 series subwoofer. Unlike some of my co-workers I am not really into hard shaking bass thus the generous 375 watts of RMS power handling, and my music genre, indie rock, really doesn’t require deep bass. What it does require is crisp, precise, and accurate bass which is exactly what I get from the G312-44. The woofer is equipped with RadialVent® technology for enhanced heat dissipation and increased power handling. This allows me to play my sub longer without having to worry about it clipping. The Soft Par System (SPS™) technology allows for cone assembly removal making it easy to replace any parts that wear out from use or even change my voice coils to simplify installation when adding more subs.
