Jaybird Bluetooth Headphones

It’s hard to get your swoll on at the gym when all you hear is seventeen different remixes of a Justin Bieber song.  In order to save your ears from the horrors of modern day music you should consider getting some sort of sports headphones. However, there are lots that suck to put it frankly.  If you’re looking for ones that wont give you buyer’s remorse, then consider any in-ear headphones by Jaybird.  They have recently released several models of Bluetooth headphones that are sure to put you in the zone while you work out those things you call muscles.

Freedom Sprint

JayBird JF4MBL Freedom Sprint

The Freedom Sprint is an upgraded and more compact version of the original Freedom Bluetooth headphones.  I’ve tried these out personally at the gym and was very satisfied when I phased out all of the juice heads and dude-bros. I’m just like, “Do they even lift?” All of the controls are easily configured on the right earpiece for functions such as play, pause, answer/end phone calls, and skip tracks which means you never have to touch your phone during your work out. They are extremely comfortable in your ear and won’t come out of your ear even if you decide to do twelve backflips in a row. They come with a plethora of different ear tips so even if you have elf ears you’ll be able to find a pair that works for you. Did I mention that they sound really good too?

JayBird BlueBuds X

JayBird BlueBuds X

The Jaybird BlueBuds are the newest addition to the Bluetooth family. These little guys are even more compact than the Freedom Sprints.  Unlike the Sprints, the BlueBuds have an in-line controller for all music and phone call functionality and have management clips for the cord to contour to the shape of your head.  If you’re lazy about charging, then you’ll be happy to know that they have 8 hours of play time for extended workout use. Both the Sprints and the BlueBuds are sweat-proof which means you can excrete as much sweat as you want on these headphones and they will be unscathed. The Bluebuds are definitely at the fore-front of Blueooth in-ear headphones.

Whether you’re running a marathon or punching slabs of meat, you and your ears will be happy.

Top 3 Components for an Audiophile Headphone Setup

Your Sound Isn’t Good Enough

A fair amount of people are usually content with the standard white earbuds that come with their iPods.  However, there are those who have a higher calling for their ears.   There are those who will not be oppressed by the tyranny of sub-par sound. Ladies and gentleman, I am talking about the audiophile, of course.  I speak from experience when I say it is both a gift and a curse being an audiophile.  My friends will tell me to listen to a sweet song only to be disappointed when my ears start to bleed from utterly disappointing sound. So, if you’re looking to break the audiophile sound barrier and become one of the audio elite, then you better take the advice that i’m about to give you!

There are a few things you’re going to need to complete your audiophile transformation:

  • Good Headphones
  • Headphone Amplifier
  • High Quality Source
Custom One Pro

Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro

Obviously, you’re going to need some good headphones to start.  Based on your preference you might choose to go with ether in-ear headphones or over/on ear headphones.   If you’re looking to go the in-ear route, then I would suggest something like the Westone UM series which is top-notch when it comes to in-ear monitors.  If you want some over-ear headphones, then I would suggest something like the Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro.   There are many factors to consider with headphones and many aspects of them are heavily opinion based. Audiophiles will generally steer toward an open-back design as it offers more detailed analytic sound, and a wider soundstage.  Furthermore, they usually prefer a headphone with an even, flat response to give the best representation of the sound without adding unwanted color.  There is a headphone for everyone and my main advice is to listen to as many as possible in order to see what you’re into.

FiiO E17

Headphone amplifiers are a commonly overlooked aspect of an audiophile set up. If you have some good headphones, then you’re going to need some good power to compliment that.  Not only does a headphones amplifier drastically increase the sound quality of your headphones, but some of them have equalization settings so you can fine tune your sound.  FiiO makes some awesome amplifiers that won’t break the bank.

Having a good audio source is the final piece to the puzzle.  For example,  even if you have awesome headphones and an amplifier, you will not get the full potential if you have crappy audio files.  Most people are going to be listening to MP3 or internet radio from their iPhone or iPod.  However, the key is to find files with low compression such as a FLAC or other lossless-type files.  Even high quality MP3 files will suffice in most cases.

Remember that there is no perfect formula these are just some basic guidelines. To give you guys an example, I’ve been using the Beyerdaynamic Custom One Pros with a FiiO E17 amplifier and it has been by far my favorite set-up.  Some of you not might agree but that’s the beauty of headphones! There is something for everyone!  Remember:  Life is too short to listen to crappy sound!

NuForce Cube Review: Ultra-Portable Media Center

Take it Just about Anywhere

They finally arrived. After careful negotiations and a few flattering words, we got our hands on a box full of NuForce goodies.  While we certainly are grateful for all the quality stuff we got and expect to create equally impressive videos for a number of the products we got such as the NuForce Air DAC iWireless system, one of the most impressive and visually striking items we received is NuForce Cube. The elegant lines, a clear box resembling the minimalism of Apple packaging, and rich solid colors stood in stark contrast to the dry brown of the cardboard shipping box. But what is most impressive, apart from the aesthetics of the Cube, is the range of technologies NuForce has integrated into this diminutive 2″ box.

How Many Features Can Be Packed Into a 2″ Cube?

Don't Let Size Fool You: the Cube is Loud, Detailed, and Packs a DAC and Headphone Amp

In an effort to beef-up your mobile rig, NuForce has equipped the Cube with a headphone amplifier, a 16-bit/48kHz Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC), and an 3.5mm (1/8″) AUX. In theory, the goal of fitting so many functions in one place is to offer users a central sound entertainment hub. To that end, the Cube definitely delivers the key terms that will ignite the interest of virtually any audiophile. Adding to the portability of the Cube, it has a built-in battery that can deliver roughly eight continuous hours of playback and can be recharged through USB connection.

While packing so many features seems like it may become unwieldy, switching between the USB DAC function of the Cube in speaker mode to headphone mode was as easy plugging the phones in. To test the claims power of the headphone amplifier, I linked it to headphones rated at 100 Ohms. By no means the highest ohm load available, but one where issues start to become apparent if the cans are being under-powered (beside, the Cube is intended as a portable system. If you consider headphones over 100 ohms “portable” maybe you should reconsider).

As a headphone amplifier and DAC, the Cube performed remarkably well and delivered the sound quality expected of NuForce: clean, true to the signal, and minimally colored. But, to prevent skirting the most important question of the speaker’s performance too long, I move on.

Pandora’s Box?

Unlike Hephaestus who according to ancient Greek myth unleashed evil on the world upon opening Pandora’s box against Zeus’ command, unlocking the power of the NuForce Cube will not be as chaotic nor as reprehensible.

Instead, your first impression  is likely to be pure awe at volume this 2″ box can achieve. The first notes flooded through the speaker with utmost authority sounding loud and shockingly clear. For the fact that the speaker is no larger than a Kennedy Half-Dollar, the speaker retained a respectable amount of detail in the high frequencies and just enough bass to round out the reproduction and give the music a sense of depth.

While the Cube performed impressively in at mid-volume levels, it began to loose its brilliance once we pushed it up to its limits. Of course, no one expects to blow down the house or set off alarms with this little thing, but distortion is never a good thing and there was a perceivable level of distortion once we reached the highest volume thresholds.

For what it is and what it is designed to do, the NuForce Cube performs at a high level. It is hard to imagine a speaker with so many features, let alone one that can match the quality of the Cube. Although its somewhat high price-tag may deter some buyers, those who know what they are looking for and understand the quality of NuForce products will not hesitate to rejoice over the NuForce Cube.
