Kenwood eXcelon Subwoofers

Subwoofer drivers seem to be getting smaller and smaller every day. What’s difficult about manufacturing a subwoofer with shallow mounting depth is retaining the heavy impacting, quality filled bass that you can get from a larger subwoofer driver. This year at CES 2011 Kenwood announced the introduction of two new high-performance shallow subwoofer models engineered and produced as part of the eXcelon high-end exclusive Kenwood line. These subwoofers help make it easier for you to fit a subwoofer that can really bump into even the smallest applications.

The Kenwood XR-W12F is a 13-inch subwoofer model that can be installed in a standard 12-inch subwoofer enclosure due to unique basket geometry that provides extra mounting area for the cone and surround assembly while maintaining a standard 12-inch cutout diameter. The oversized carbon glass-fiber cone is held in place by a heavy-duty rubber surround, and this combination allows for better control of cone excursion under high power operation. A new dual ventilation system provides exception heat dissipation and allows for extremely shallow applications even if the vented pole piece is partially obstructed by the enclosure. Unlike most competitive woofer designs, the dual ventilation system works together with the aero-shaped basket to allow air to move freely away from the back of the cone assembly, further reducing the distorting effect of trapped air and resulting in a very linear bass response. The W12F is reequipped with push-style terminals that can accept 8 gauge-sized premium speaker cable. Power handling capability of the XR-W12F is a 450 watts RMS at 4 ohms 1,500 watts peak.

The 11-inch version of the XR-W12F is the XR-W10F which can be installed in a standard 10-inch subwoofer enclosure. The XR-10F has all of the features, materials and technologies of XR-W12F but in a smaller package. Power handling capability of the XR-W10F is 350 watts RMS and 1,200 watts peak.
