Subwoofer Buying Guide

Adding a subwoofer to your car audio system will allow you to get that extra bass that will help enhance your listening experience. Often times without one, you could be missing out on a lot of that low-frequency sound in your music. A subwoofer will allow you to blast the bass in music like Rap/Hip-Hop or EDM and even hear the more subtle bass guitar in alternative. No matter what your music taste is, a subwoofer can be beneficial to your music.

Subwoofer Size

Before you purchase a new subwoofer, there are some things that you need to consider. The first thing you need to consider is what size subwoofer is going to be best for you. We have a great article to guide you through what size would be best for your music taste. Some of the most popular sizes that we offer are 8, 10, 12, and 15 inches. Each specific size will be beneficial to your taste.

Type of Subwoofer

The next thing you have to consider is whether you want an enclosed subwoofer or a component subwoofer. An enclosed subwoofer contains an internal amp. This makes this option much easier to install. This option also saves space and is easier to install as opposed to component subs. Component subs rely on an external amp to power it. These take up more space and can often times be more costly. However, there is a noticeable difference in overall sound quality. This option is far more customizable to your needs. They are also more tedious to install because you have to build the enclosure and properly wire them.

Type of Wiring

Another thing you have to consider is series vs parallel wiring. We have an entire article on this subject that will give you a more in depth understanding of the differences between the two configurations. This brief excerpt does a great job explaining the key differences:

  • Series doubles the Ohm load reducing RMS power
  • Parallel cuts the Ohm load in half increasing RMS power

Ohm is the measure of resistance and there is never a “best” option except for what your amplifier thinks is best. Ensure your subwoofer and amplifier can handle the Ohm load you are wiring to.
